Can you tell us about your journey to becoming the Design Editor at Monocle?
Absolutely. I started my career as a landscape architect, but my passion for design storytelling led me to pursue a career in design journalism. I joined Monocle nearly six years ago as a researcher and worked my way up to become the Design Editor. Now, I oversee all editorial design coverage in the magazine, host the Monocle on Design podcast, and edit our Monocle Minute on Design newsletter.
How has your background in landscape architecture influenced your approach to design journalism?
It taught me the importance of storytelling around design and the role that design media can play in supporting the delivery of good design. It also gave me a unique perspective on design that I bring to my work at Monocle.
Can you share your experience with cycling and its significance in your life?
I ride my bike every day, both for commuting and leisure. I'm committed to cycling as a practical and enjoyable means of transportation. Growing up in Perth, where cycling infrastructure was lacking, shaped my perspective on urban mobility and the importance of making cycling accessible and desirable.
How did Monocle approach the selection process for the award, and why do you believe MONoPOLE No O1 stands out as the Best Two-Wheeler?
Our selection process meticulously examined design quality, manufacturing excellence, and the product's impact on enhancing quality of life. Who do you envision as the typical MONoPOLE customer?
The typical MONoPOLE customer is an urban dweller who values quality, design, and practicality. They recognize the benefits of cycling as a mode of transportation and appreciate the versatility of a bike that smoothly integrates into their lifestyle.
How do you think MONoPOLE contributes to the future of urban mobility?
As a society, we have to change the narrative from seeing biking as a specialized activity, much like running, to embracing it as a practical, everyday mode of transportation. Just as walking doesn't demand special equipment or attire, biking should be seen as equally accessible and straightforward.
MONoPOLE addresses key challenges in urban mobility by offering a sustainable and convenient alternative to cars. Its innovative design and functionality make cycling more accessible and appealing, contributing to a shift towards car-free cities.
Beyond product design, how can businesses like MONoPOLE promote sustainability?
Sustainability should indeed be integrated into every aspect of a business, prioritizing longevity, ethical practices, and local production. By ensuring your bikes are built to last and produced with minimal environmental impact, you're not just offering products; you're promoting sustainable lifestyles. It's crucial to recognize that your primary competition isn't just other bike brands; it's cars.
